Engaging with the audience

As a UX Design/ Research/ Strategy professional working for the country’s leading online ticket booking company, Sonal Malhotra has the opportunity to really connect with its users.

BookMyShow has been the pioneer and market leader in the domain of online ticket booking in India. When she joined the Mumbai-based company two years back, the design team was in its formative stage. Sonal was the first hire for a UX-strategy/research specific profile, though they already had a team of some very talented UI/UX folks. Even though the design wing was one of the new additions, the founders had immense faith and a vision to make Design the third pillar of the company (the other two being Tech and Product). With the support of the founders and the Design Head, she got promising opportunities to initiate many UX projects that were a first for the company. Sonal started her journey as an individual working with the design team as a UX reviewer. Now, she heads a team of six UX specialists (and growing), which looks into all products of BookMyShow and its acquisitions.

Emotions and opportunity mapping on user journeys

Sonal is also an intermittently practicing artist. Her most recent achievement in that regard was bagging a spot amongst the top nine winning installations at Kalaghoda Arts Festival 2016.

“The Indian UX design scenario is dynamic, – she says. Conversational bots and virtual reality tools have changed the definition of the game lately. In India, as much as in the rest of the world, the focus will shift drastically away from ‘surface based’ interfaces such as mobile apps and web platforms. More and more experimentation will happen in the domain of internet of things, voice-based interfaces and virtual reality assistance. Indian companies will soon move ‘beyond the app’ and look for more transcendental solutions to enhance user experience.”
