Going for Gold

Held recently in Munich, the iF DESIGN AWARD 2017 ceremony celebrated the winners of one of the world’s most valued design competitions. What we love about design is that it evolves with technology and innovation.

As Steve Jobs famously said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” While designers continuously create new ‘things’ with enhanced user experience, there are only a handful of organizations around the world that recognize design excellence and give these designers their moment of fame. One such institution is the iF International Forum Design GmbH, which organizes one of the world’s most celebrated and valued design competitions: the iF DESIGN AWARD. Every year for the last 64 years, the iF International Forum Design GmbH (Hannover) bestows the internationally renowned label for design.

On 10 March, over 2,000 guests from 41 countries attended the iF DESIGN AWARD 2017 at the BMW Welt in Munich. Ralph Wiegmann, iF CEO, presented the coveted iF Gold Award to 75 winners in disciplines ranging from Product Design, Communication Design, Packaging Design and Service Design to Architecture and Professional Concept. A total of 5,575 contributions from 59 countries entered the competition this year.

Earlier in the year, a 58-member, independent, international jury of experts from 19 countries awarded the design label, the iF DESIGN AWARD 2017, in Hamburg. Speaking at the jury meet, Jury Chairman, Fritz Frenkler said, ‘The competition is becoming increasingly international. To do justice to the diverse, local and cultural characteristics and needs of submissions, our jury has to include members from around the world. They have done an outstanding job. After all, the design and production quality of the entries gets better from year to year. In formal esthetic terms, the majority of entries in some categories are very similar. These include computers, printers and smartphones. This makes it extremely important to distinguish, identify and evaluate relevant details. This can only be done by experts who aspire to be objective, and to thus judge the world’s most important design award.”
