Dear Naushad and Sudhir,
It was nice to see Naushad’s image of the cover of POOL 114, or what now seems to have morphed into DESIGN INDIA! I feel bit of nostalgia seeing the issue as I recall the days many years ago when INDI DESIGN began on its first steps in our own India House, and pondering over a name for the journal, peering out of the window, gazing at my lap pool, Sudhir thought of “pooling ideas and concepts.” Reading over the wonderful article on Naushad I felt there was a huge missing component! Naushad and Farhad have been “Patrons of the Arts,” or should we say “Patrons of Design!” They are arguably the industrial house more committed and successful than any other in bringing design right onto the workshop floor, in the form of award winning factories (for lack of a better word).
On two occasions factories they have commissioned have won annual Indian Institute of Architects national level Annual Awards for Excellence. Once could have been by chance, but twice shows a long standing commitment to design, supporting and encouraging designers and getting results. The boiler factory at Chakan, not only won the IIA Annual Award, but was included as one of The Best Ten Places to Work in India, with the others being IT, corporate and boutique offices and studios. I encourage INDI DESIGN to communicate the link between industry and design more and more and to include the artefacts that are the proof in the pudding too!
Below are images of the Krohne Marshall factory in Pimpri-Chinchwad that is both a remodelling of an old work place and a state of the art extension.
