Visual artist Taarika John gave up a career in advertising to chart a freelance path where she’s inspired by all that’s happening around her!
“I’ve always been a very independent person,” she says, “so being my own boss works very well for me! I love the freedom that comes with working independently. Every day offers me the exciting opportunity of working on something I love. There’s so much beauty to experience and so many stories to tell. I love being able to create and share what I see with the world.”
Taarika believes, that while working with a client, probably the most important thing is to be professional:
“Be clear in your communications, make sure that you have all the information you need from the client to begin working. If you have questions, ask. It doesn’t matter if you think it’s a dumb question, ask anyway; it’s always better to have clarity. When you set timelines, make sure you meet them. They’re all pretty basic tasks but sometimes when you get wrapped up in the creative process it can slip your mind. Good communication goes a long way in building good relationships with your clients.”
“Creating art is such a personal process and it can often be challenging to work within something that’s so much a part of you. However, I’m always grateful to be able to build a career doing something I love so much,” she admits.
