Layers of meaning

profile-1Aakriti Kumar’s furniture reflects her belief in integrating responsible, environmentally friendly thinking into her design process. She runs a furniture design atelier in Gurgaon, – Differniture – with an idea to create a different or alternative take on furniture. Firm caters to a niche clientele by producing bespoke, avant garde design with functional value.

“We create pieces to stand out from the current typical framework furniture trends,” – Aakriti explains. “The philosophy behind Differniture’s design process is to create pieces that are a perfect blend of sculptural art and function.”

She believes that form and function is the age-old debate when it comes to design:

“One can create something beautiful and well crafted but without a function it remains a piece of art. I wanted to merge the sculptural aspect of art along with giving it a functional value.”

Experimentation at the workshop excites Aakriti the most:

One can make as many iterations of a design on paper or digitally but actually working with the material and seeing how it behaves along with its imperfections – or rather, beauty – is what makes each piece a unique learning experience.
