Academic, author and advisor, Prof. Ashoke Chatterjee has had a long and diverse career in design and allied fields. Over the 25 years he was associated with the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, he served as Executive Director (1975-85), Senior Faculty Advisor for Design Management and Communication (1985 to 1995), and Distinguished Fellow (1995 until retirement in 2001). He has been honorary president of the Crafts Council of India, and is on the board of directors of Aid to Artisans, a US based non-profit organization that offers practical assistance to artisans worldwide.

From the earliest attempts to initiate formal design education in this country to the current status of design as indispensable to industry and progress, Prof. Chatterjee has seen it all. Not surprisingly, he is in a unique position to talk about the changing world of Indian design…
